Apple iPhone Duo: Is Apple's First Foldable iPhone Worth £1,999?

Apple has finally entered the foldable smartphone market with the iPhone Duo. Unlike a normal annual iPhone upgrade, the Duo changes the basic shape of the device: closed, it works as a compact smartphone; opened, it becomes a much larger screen for video, reading, multitasking and productivity.

It is one of Apple's most interesting iPhone launches in years - but with a starting price of £1,999 in the UK, it is also a serious purchase. Two Screens, One iPhone

The defining feature is the folding design. Closed, the iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch folding Super Retina XDR display - effectively giving you a much larger workspace without carrying a tablet.

Thin Design and a Complex Hinge

Apple has built the Duo around a titanium structure and a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. The hinge has to allow the phone to fold repeatedly while also supporting the flexible display when opened.

That engineering is impressive, but long-term real-world durability is one of the things worth watching. A laboratory test cannot perfectly reproduce years of pockets, dust, accidental drops, heat, cold and repeated opening and closing.

Apple Pencil Comes to iPhone

One of the Duo's more unusual advantages is Apple Pencil support. On a conventional iPhone, a stylus would have limited appeal; on a 7.6-inch display it becomes much more useful for handwritten notes, document markup, drawing, signatures and photo annotation.

This pushes the Duo closer to being a pocket-sized productivity device rather than simply an iPhone that folds.

The iPhone Duo uses Apple's A20 Pro platform, giving it flagship-level processing and on-device AI capability. The device also uses a custom cooling system to manage performance inside a very thin folding chassis.

The larger inner display gives Apple room to make iPhone multitasking genuinely useful. Two applications can be used side by side, allowing combinations such as Safari and Notes, Messages and Maps, or Email and Calendar.

For people who regularly work from a phone, this could be more meaningful than another small increase in processor speed. The value of a foldable is not simply that the screen is bigger - it is what the software allows you to do with that space.

Cameras

Apple has equipped the Duo with a 48MP Fusion main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The folding design also creates some interesting shooting options. The outer screen can act as a preview while the higher-quality rear cameras are used for selfies or portraits.

The phone can also be positioned partially folded for photography, video calls or recording without always needing a separate stand.

Battery Life

Apple has placed battery capacity across both halves of the device. The two sections operate together as one battery system, allowing Apple to use the space around the hinge and displays more efficiently.

What Are the iPhone Duo's Shortcomings?

1. The £1,999 Starting Price

This is the most obvious problem. At nearly £2,000 before accessories, insurance or higher storage options, the Duo sits far above a conventional smartphone purchase for many customers. The larger display has to provide genuine value to justify that premium.

2. The Folding Display Is Still an Unknown

Flexible displays have different mechanical requirements from rigid smartphone screens. The panel bends repeatedly, works around a hinge and relies on specialised layers, adhesives and structural support. Apple's engineering may prove excellent, but long-term durability will only become clear after widespread real-world use.

3. Repairs Could Be More Complicated

From a repair perspective, the Duo combines two displays, a flexible inner OLED, a precision hinge, batteries distributed across the chassis and additional display electronics. That does not mean it will be unreliable, but certain repairs are likely to be more involved than on a conventional iPhone.

The folding display and hinge are the two areas we will be particularly interested in as technical information, replacement parts and real-world failure patterns become available.

4. It Is a First-Generation Product

Early adopters get the newest idea first, but they also accept more uncertainty. We do not yet have years of evidence showing how Apple's first foldable will age after tens of thousands of folds and everyday wear.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro

For most buyers, the iPhone 18 Pro is likely to remain the simpler and safer choice. It offers flagship performance in a conventional design and costs considerably less.

The Duo makes more sense for someone who will genuinely use the folding screen - for multitasking, travel, documents, video, reading, Apple Pencil work or simply having a tablet-like display that still fits in a pocket.

If the larger screen would rarely be used, paying the foldable premium becomes difficult to justify.
